Welcome email posted;

Hello Everyone,

You are receiving this email as you are currently listed as having a child scheduled to play soccer with the Smyrna Soccer Club this Fall.  I have been assigned as your child's coach for the U4 Sharks (3-4 year old's, co-ed).  If you are planning on changing your child's team note that the Club has stated that rosters are more or less final at this point and movement will only be granted for exceptional circumstances.  Contact [email protected] as well as myself ASAP if you need to change teams.

A little background:

My name is Erik Copeland and I will be the head coach this fall.  My wife, Marie Lallemand, will serve as an assistant coach if/when my work schedule conflicts with practices or games (I am an airline pilot).  Our son, Thierry, will also be playing on the Sharks as well.   We both follow professional soccer and Marie has played on a couple of informal women's teams in the past.   I'm scheduled to attend a coach's certification course for U4-U6 age groups next weekend.

About the season:

The parents meeting is Monday evening (tomorrow night) at 630pm at the Smyrna community center's large banquet hall and will offer a lot of information regarding the upcoming season as well as giving you a chance to meet the other players and coaches.  I will not be able to attend the meeting but Marie will be present.  More information on the meeting can be found on the website, www.smyrnasoccerclub.com.  Please attend if you can.

The first practice will be held on Monday, 27th August (1 week away) at Jonquil Feild, U-06 #4.  The website has a map posted under "Fields and Practice Schedules" to help orient you to the field layout.  For now we will hold practice at 6 pm and it should last about 45 min's to 1 hour.  Please tell me what time you would prefer to hold practice on Monday nights and I'll try to find a solution that works for everyone.  So far 6pm seems to be OK for everyone I've been able to talk to.  Don't forget to bring a drink for your child.

The only piece of equipment necessary to be able to participate on Monday is shin guards (club's insurance) and again, some sort of beverage for your child to hydrate with.  To maximize the time your child gets to play during practice, please have them bring their own ball (size # 3, $11 at Jonquil S.G.).  Uniforms are arriving early next week and I'll probably bring them to the first practice.  Games will be every Saturday mornings starting on September 8th. Jonquil Sporting Goods on Springs Road in Smyrna is a local sports retailer who is offering a 10% discount to Club players this fall.  The recommended equipment list includes:  1 sized 3 soccer ball ($11), soccer specific cleats ($27), Socks ($5, multiple pairs...???), and shin protectors (guards) ($7?).  Regular running shoes can also be used but football (American) cleats should be avoided as the front cleat will interfere with kicking accuracy, though this advice from the league may be more suited to older players; use your best judgement here.

The main focus this season is to get the kids to come out and have fun while learning a little bit about sportsmanship, the game of soccer, and developing some very basic soccer skills.  Parental involvement during practices, assuming it supports the goals just discussed, is not only permitted, it's highly encouraged.  I'll be discussing this more as the season progresses but keep in mind I'll be encouraging at least a little participation from the parents.

www.smyrnasoccerclub.com has and will continue to have a plethora of information.  Once logged in, navigate your way to our team's dedicated site.  Here I'll post announcements, schedule changes (if any), and other important information as it arises.  You child has his/her own profile which you can customize to your preference.  Adding a photo of your child will greatly help me in learning their names but this is optional.  Under my profile I have included my contact info for your convenience.   I'll try to post important messages to both the website and to email.

Volunteers Needed:

2 volunteers are needed to assist with the team this fall.  First we need a Team Coordinator:  "Team Coordinator duties include distributing league information to the team, communicate and distribute the game schedule, create and distribute a snack schedule, send out reminder emails, help with uniforms, picture day, and organize the end of season party."   Basically, it is an administrative role not requiring too much time. We also need an assistant coach.  This position will be a designated representative to fill in should I or Marie be unable to attend a practice or game.  Anyone else interested in volunteering their time in any way please let me know.

That's all I have for now.  Look out for Marie at the parents meeting and I look forward to meeting most of you at our first practice.  Again, feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, etc.

-- Keep well,
Erik Copeland
