SVU hires Tom Mitch as New Technical Director

Harrisonburg, Va., March 6, 2014 – Shenandoah Valley United (SVU) Board President Dave O’Donnell has announced the appointment of Tom Mitch as the organization’s new Technical Director.  Mitch will begin his responsibilities with the club on May 1, 2014, and will oversee the long-term strategies for development of both coaches and players. 

“Tom’s combined knowledge and experience with youth players, both as a coach and a program director made him an ideal candidate for this position,” says Eilidh Thomson, SVU Executive Director. “Along with an impressive playing career, Tom has built a notable reputation as a coach, working with youths at all levels of the game. We’re extremely pleased to have him oversee our technical programs as we continue our goal of improving the development of our young players, and as an important step to connecting the dots between all areas of player development, including coaching education, parent education, the college game and our grassroots programming.”

Mitch has experience and knowledge in leading some on the nation’s top soccer organizations, including 19 years of Premier Club coaching experience.  He is the founder and director of Grasshopper FC (now NEFC Metro North).  Former stints include MYSA instructional staff coach and ODP evaluator, Tufts University assistant soccer coach, Sachems FC head coach and academy director, Boston Blast FC head coach and school of excellent director, Boston Lightning FC head coach and school of excellent director, Bavarian Soccer Club, and Whitefish Bay High School (Wi.).  He holds a UEFA ‘B’ license, the NSCAA Premier License and the NSCAA Director of Coaching License. 

Mitch was a four-year starter at Duke University, where he helped his side to a Division I National Championship in 1986.  He was the Wisconsin High School Player of the Year in 1983, leading his team to the State Championship in 1982 and 1983.  Mitch was also a three-time Wisconsin State Cup Champion while playing for the Bavarian Soccer Club in Milwaukee.
